Like most berries, tummelberries are rich in various minerals, vitamin C and are known to contain a significant amount of antioxidants. Tummelberries taste a lot like tayberry but it is widely believed that this new hybrid has a lower flavor profile. This is why it is hard to find proper nutritional value or special desserts made using this berry. Nonetheless, tummelberries are edible and have a subtle tangy taste that makes a good addition to pies and fruit salads.
Tummelberries are a variety of raspberry hybrids that were developed by the Scottish Research Institute that also bred the tayberries. Tummelberries were named after the Tummel River in Perthshire, Scotland.
Similar to tayberries, tummelberries are also a cross between the blackberry and raspberry but differ in the sense that tummelberries were bred with the aim to produce a more cold-hardy bush. The plant produces white flowers that turn into large, round fruits with a bright red color. These berries are harvested in summer and can freeze well for a long time without any damage to their shape.
